Abstract
Background and Aim: Laboratories always face potential hazards due to the use of chemicals, biological materials, and special equipment. The present study evaluated the safety status of laboratories at Baqiyatullah University of Medical Sciences in 2025.

Methods: The 17 laboratories of Baqiyatullah University of Medical Sciences were studied. The laboratories’ safety was assessed using a checklist.  In each laboratory, 11 sections were evaluation. A range of scores below 50% was considered as poor safety, in that sector, between 50 and 75% was considered average, and above 75% was considered with acceptable safety.

Results: The maximum score that could be obtained by laboratories was 316 points. The minimum score obtained was 123 points, corresponding to laboratory number 14. The maximum score obtained was 257, corresponding to laboratory number 17. Apart from laboratories 8 and 9, all of the laboratories scored less than 50% in terms of emergency response which classified as unacceptable. In terms of emergency showers and eyewashes, laboratories 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, and 16 scored less than 50%, indicating poor safety in this area. In terms of safety management, except for laboratories 5, 8, 9, 15, and 16, all other laboratories were evaluated at unacceptable level.

Conclusion: The areas of safety management, emergency response, emergency showers, and eyewash stations require special attention. Developing safety guidelines, periodic assessments, training in emergency situations, installing warning signs, standardizing safety equipment and training in how to use safety equipment are recommended.
